A Plus Pal we believe both arts and science students should pay attention to Math in VCE. There is no doubt that many students get unsatisfactory grades in VCE due to their bad performance in Math, and some even say “Math is really beyond me.” Is Math as difficult as they think?
The simple answer is “no”. In Math learning, the importance of intensive exercises is acknowledged, but students also need to pay attention to the skills behind. The following will discuss two Math learning methods: intensive exercises and an Error Log for a collection of mistakes.

We all have heard such a saying: “to learn Math well, the key is to do intensive exercises.” It is true, but it has driven many students to totally absorb themselves in exercising. If you feel a sense of success after intensive exercises, but your grades do not improve with the increase in your exercises, what you need is to review and summarize.

As for the Multiple-Choice questions, instead of passively reciting the answers, you should actively explore the questions.
As for medium-difficult questions and short answer questions, you should discover the train of thought and the steps in solving them.
In this process, you’ll find many similarities in solutions even between different question types. Then you can summarize and apply those similarities to all kinds of questions. Such summaries can not only improve the quality of exercises, but also save time and enhance the accuracy in Math tests.

In science, there are many theories and laws, as well as various exceptions. And those exceptions are often become the “traps” in tests. To avoid those traps, it is effective to make an Error Log for a collection of mistakes and review those exceptions frequently.
When using the Log, attention should be paid to the following two points. First, review it frequently: the collection is not merely a record of mistakes. To make full use of it, you should often review or reanswer the questions in it. This will prevent you from recommitting the same error in similar questions. Second, exchange ideas: you can learn from others’ mistakes through Log exchange with your classmates.
